A bizarre incident from the AZ Alkmaar & Ajax game on Wednesday (21st December) when in the 35th minute AZ Keeper Esteban Alvarado was attacked by a fan, Alvarado also managed to get in a good few kicks in himself before then being red carded by referee Bas Nijhuis for Violent Conduct.

A clearly infuriated AZ manager Verbeek then instructed his players to leave the field of play and not to return causing the game to be abandonded with Ajax leading 1-0. Referee Bas Nijhuis said afterwards "

I understand that Esteban was defending himself, but he walked to him (the supporter) and kicked him multiple times,” Nijhuis said, defending the decision to send the goalkeeper off."

“He could also have walked away.”
